Unfortunately I am seeing more and more companies looking for one generalist rather than several specialists. The main reason for this trend must be fitting in tighter budgets due to the economy. Two problems exist with this strategy. One is the lower quality of the work generalists do and the second problem is no scalability. It's a great recipe for killing company growth.

@Braedon, thanks for your comment.

Search engines do not have a preference as long as the choice is consistent.

There are advantages and disadvantages to using both approaches. Recently the proliferation of URL shortening services make the non WWW a useful option in that the URLs are 4 characters shorter ("www.") by default. Perhaps in some cases the non www URL may eliminate the need for URL shortening. Working keyword phrases into raw URLs may prove advantageous with Twitter search for example.

Binh Nguyen (comment #3) still makes a valid point about the "site:examplesite.com" advanced operator including sub domain URLs in the result count. However, this could work against you if you want to segregate those URLs.

From my perspective I have not seen a strong reason to choose one over the other. It boils down to personal preference.

I like the idea of checking what has the best page rank for older sites. However supporting www. for news sites is pretty much pointless and has no effect on usability as you have claimed because the site is going to go to your site whether they type in www or not so usability is a non-issue.

The issue here is what do search engines prefer? From my searching on the issue it appears that they (SE's) just don't like having two domains that point to the same content. Therefore it makes more sense to deprecate www. as it is a pointless subdomain.

I think you're right on the money, and I'm glad, because I'm sick of IE getting slower every day.

Chrome is much faster, but its a shame that they still don't have Google toolbar for it.

Thanks,
Pat O'Malley

I have used WWW for years, 301 redirect. This has been the school of thought, as earlier Google had recommended it. What I am looking for though is a "perfect Search Engine Optimized website", and the question beckons, is there any place that puts less emphasis on the sub-domain name "www"? I am reading here and there that sub-domain names are not considered root. At the same time, it appears with some opinions, that google will sometimes penalize a non www if they suspect duplication. I do know that some testing programs will show both domains with the www searched, and misses the non www as far as the stats. Searching the www does include both in stats programs. It does seem with the history, that WWW will always be acceptable even if the root domain is determined the best. The www is not necessary anymore for sure. It all seems a old school set up, like doing your web site wrong, and living with it. a href="http://www.vacationhouston.com Striving for perfect SEO and code...
